My Vons Trip: $7 Spent for Over $87 Worth of Groceries!

by Jess on March 11, 2010

Today I stopped off at Vons to take advantage of that sweet Kellogg’s catalina promotion that ends today. I lucked out and found a blinkie machine with 70¢/1 Kellogg’s Cereal coupons, however it was being rampaged by a little girl who was taking coupons from it like it was dispensing free candy. She was there for what seemed like forever. I laugh about it now, but I have to admit, I thought for sure she was taking them all and I was having a mini coupon conniption while I waited for her to leave. Sometimes I can be such a spaz!

I spent a total of $7 out of pocket for everything – yippee!
The regular retail total would have been $87.53 – that’s a 92 % Savings!

You may be wondering what the heck I plan on doing with 20 boxes of cereal. After all, I am single. I like Fruit Loops, but I certainly don’t need 20 boxes worth. I will be donating 15 of them to my local food bank, Food Share of Ventura County on behalf of The Penny Experiment. The retail value for these 15 boxes is $52.35 and I spent nothing out of pocket so my savings for this donation is 100%! I love working deals like this to help those in need in my community. Not only do I get a mini shopping high & an instant smile on my face, but I know my donation will truly benefit someone who needs it.

Curious to know what I got and how I did it? Below are the transactions that I made between 2 different stores. While I certainly could have done all 4 at the same store, I felt bad taking 20 boxes of cereal. The catalina promotion on the Kellogg’s cereal (buy 5, get $4) ended tonight.

So, the cashier told me last night I could only use 3 coupons per BRAND (3 for POST and that was it–even if was a different coupon from POST)–she called the manager over who said to take my coupons anyway….has anyone else run into this–this was a first to me….but got out for $2.30!!! yay!

Sounds to me like the cashier isn't familiar with how coupons are redeemed. Vons does NOT limit the number of coupons you may use per brand, nor is that even noted in their coupon policy. Honestly, I've never heard of anything like that. Some cashiers always seem to come up with the craziest reasons for denying perfectly acceptable coupons…

You may ALWAYS use one manufacturer coupon per item purchased and that's pretty standard across the board at any give store (not just Vons). If a cashier or manager ever gives you a hassle about that feel free to contact Safeway corporate at: 1.877.723.3929

Sorry you were given a hassle, but I'm so happy you got out fine!
