Follow Me Shopping: 5 Cent Shopping at CVS!

by Jess on October 19, 2010

We have a lot of new readers that found their way to the CVS list this week, so I thought it might be fun to start sharing my CVS trips each week to inspire newbies curious about how this CVS stuff works. I’ve been “rolling” the same Extra Care Bucks since January and have spent around $40 or so out of pocket and I am fully stocked on just about everything Health & Beauty related for at least 8 months. According to my latest receipt, I’ve saved $979 this year alone. Crazy, right?! Are you playing the CVS Drugstore Game?

Yesterday I dropped in CVS and picked up all of the above for only 5 CENTS. Granted I did have to pay sales tax of $1.17, so my total out of pocket ended up being $1.22. But wait! I actually made money by picking up more items that earned me new Extra Care Bucks to roll. Here’s how I did it:

Transaction Details:

(1) Schick Hydro 5 Razor | $8.99
ECB Earned: $5.00

(1) Neutrogena Split End Mender | $7.49
ECB Earned: $7.49

(1) CVS Cocoa Butter Lotion | 99¢

(4) Mentos Gum | BOGO ($1.79)

Subtotal: $21.05

Coupons Used:
- $4/20 store coupon I received from the Magic Coupon Machine
- $2/1 Hand & Body Lotion I received last week from the Magic Coupon Machine
- $4/1 Schick Hydro 5 from SS 10/3
- (4) $1/1 Mentos from SS 10/3
- $5 ECB earned from a previous transaction last week
- $2 ECB earned from a previous transaction last week

New Subtotal: $0.05
Tax: $1.17
Final Price: $1.22
New ECB’s Earned: $5 from the Schick and $7.49 from the Neutrogena ($12.49 in new money to spend!)

The key to playing the CVS game is to purchase items that will earn you more Extra Care Bucks so that you basically are paying with coupons and CVS “ECB” money. It’s fairly easy to get started and if you’re new to shopping with coupons at CVS make sure you read my CVS 101 Guide where I explain in detail how their reward system works and how to work it to pay little out of pocket.

If you want to jump into playing the CVS game this week and want to build your ECB stash, it’s a great week to get started!  Here’s an idea:

Beginners Idea:
Buy (1) Schick Hydro 3 or 5 Razor | $8.99
- $4/1 from SS 10/3
Pay: $4.99 + tax
ECB Earned: $5.00 (Limit 1)

So you paid $4.99 to get started, and now you have $5 to “roll” into paying for other things next week!

How have you guys done at CVS this week? Share your brags in the comments below!
