Are You a Good Shopper?

by Jess on January 27, 2011

I wanted to give you all a heads up on a new show that will air on CNBC tonight (1/27) at 9pm called, Supermarket Inc. which explores the psychology of shopping and the different methods stores use to manipulate you into a sale. Reader, Harry, sent me over the short clip above and I have to say, it looks really good. You can see more clips and learn more about the show over here.

I’m a big fan of going in to any store with a list and a plan for this very reason. The stores are very sneaky and it’s the little things they do that can completely blow your planned budget if you’re not aware.

Supermarket Inc. premieres tonight, January 27th at 9pm on CNBC. Hopefully they’ll have it online at some point too!

Growing up, we would spend anywhere from $300-400 every grocery shopping trip, which took place twice a month. (Mom still does the same thing I might add) And yes, as I grew up I noticed the same example he mentioned (limit 6 per customer) inside weekly drugstore circulars and thought I was saving a bundle buy buying for example: pantene 3/$10, I figured they were about $3.33 ea compared to $4-5/ea… ever since I began couponing Aug'09, I'm a little skeptical about purchasing the same product more than close to free bc I know high value coupons will come and go and a sale will be around the corner as well… patience truly is virtue.

My younger sister believes she's saving a bundle by buying the same masacara at Walmart for $5 than at CVS for $10, I tried explaining to her that she should wait a little bit longer and with a little luck she could get that same product for about 80% off plus cash back (ECBs). I guess couponing isn't for everyone, nevertheless, should I come up on a deal i'll just hand it over to her…

i don't think these gals (my sisters) take me serious when i tell them about a really great deal or how much i save on things.

Just last night, I stumbled upon great diaper deals via amazon, with gc's via amazon/living social, plus amazon coupon codes found in magazines, I bought a case of luvs 264 ct sz 1 and pampers baby dry 128 sz 6, all for free. im kind of scared to stock up on newborn size (im due in march) bc my first one quickly outgrew them and i was stuck with a pack n 1/2.

I believe there were two seperate segments of this show (one after the other), I haven't watched them yet but they've been Tivo'd. However, right before that was a show about Target, how they evolved…quite interesting.
